Fork FIFA

The great corrupt FIFA has decided to suspend us from participating in all international matches and has temporarily halted funding for ANFA. I guess they were not happy with our government's interference in ANFA. I understand their point, but maybe it's time FIFA also investigates corruption in ANFA as well, and not pressure the government to bow down and have the same goons running the show here in Nepal!

ANFA's annual budget is around 100+ crores, and most of it gets distributed to district football associations and into the pockets of the top leadership. The players get paid peanuts while the so-called CEO and other executive officers pay themselves Rs 2 lakhs in salary per month.

If you look at the folks running the district football associations, then you will find out that most of them are Mundrey Gundas affiliated with the old school political parties. And during ANFA elections, the district associations and the registered football clubs get a vote each. That's where the chal-khel happens, where votes are bought for cash and gifts, because the panel that wins the election get to enjoy the free cash from ANFA's budget during their tenure.

Nabil Bank's CEO posted a status on Facebook worrying about his lifelong dream of watching Nepal in the FIFA World Cup and he was sad that it won't happen in his lifetime because FIFA has suspended ANFA. I think our CEO Saheb, knows his numbers but doesn't know what suspension means. This is not a ban but a temporary suspension. If the current ANFA goons are allowed to attend the FIFA World Cup and let them run the show until the next election, then the ban will be lifted instantly.

And how does a temporary suspension affect our CEO Saheb's dream of watching Nepal play in the World Cup? If he really wants to see Nepal play in the World Cup, then why not ask his Nabil board or the majority stakeholder, the Wai Wai Chaudharys, to contribute Rs 100 crores for football in our country?

If we really want to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, then we don't have to go too far. Forget the South Americans or tiki-taka or the physical aggressiveness in the EPL. Just ask the Samurais from Japan to come to Nepal and work out a decade-long 'Operation World Cup', and we will surely qualify.

The Japanese kids learn the foundation first, the technical skills and the mental strength. And that is why Japan has been able to not only compete but also give the other bigger teams a scare in every World Cup. If our kids do not have the technical skills and the foundation by the age of 14, then they really can't play successfully in the international stage. I did not say that. Arsène Wenger told me a long time ago. Well, he personally didn't tell me. I watched his bhasan on TV.

I think the best option for now is for our National Sports Council (NSC) to give some breathing space to the chor leadership at ANFA. Get the suspension lifted. Sit down with the ANFA officials, audit all their financial statements for the past 5 years and make sure that our district football associations and football clubs are run by former athletes or coaches or even professional folks rather than the same old mundrey gundas who are in it to make some extra Rupees.
