Hey people... by looking at the stories posted by other sajha people.. I recieved an inspiration to write something of my own.. hehe THough it might not be as good but bear with me.. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After spending two years with my parents in the USA I returned to Nepal and was admitted to Modern Indian School. The impression of the school was well known, but my grandparents believed that CBSE was much recognized than the nepali board. My first year there was an average? but my sixth and seventh standard sucked. Though I did manage to pass in the finals, I never really made it in the first and second terms. Hindi- which was a new subject for me, was so difficult that I never managed to pass. Plus I was scared out of my pants of the teacher. Her hobby was to slap me in class. She totally loved it, and as a result I became less confident and became more timid. I did not find any motivation to study Hindi. Though I was popular in school, as I was the only student that had been to states, but my confidence decreased everyday. I felt more and more inferior and sometimes would wonder why my friends liked me. As a result my grades suffered even more. My parents were back from states and they were noticing my dilemma. It was a different story for my brother. He did not suffer from any inferiority but he started bunking his classes and his grades suffered too. So in the year 1996, when I was 12, my parents made a decision that would affect the rest of our lives. We were to go to India. I loved to read the Malory Towers by Edith Blyton, so was totally excited to go to a boarding school. I kept fanaticizing about how it would be. There was an incident that almost changed their decision though. In November of 1996, I went to feed my dog, as I loved dogs like crazy. I don?t know what he was thinking but he plunged at me. I felt a drop of blood in my right shoulder and realized that he had bitten me. When my grand parents saw that my ear was bitten they started panicking and wanted to rush me to a hospital. I didn?t understand why they were so fanatic.. but realized how serious it was when my grand dad shouted, ?How can we go to the hospital without the piece of her ear??? The dog had ripped out half an inch of my right ear. Our helper found the piece of my ear near the area my dog was, and we rushed to the hospital. My parents had gone to my cousins place at that time. As my grandparents had some bad experience with Teaching hospital, they took me to Bir hospital instead. We were told that the piece could not be stitched back. Had they taken me to Teaching hospital, it would have been stitched back immediately. So as a result I had to have plastic surgery from a group of Plastic surgeons traveling from the US. As my dad is a doctor, he took me to several places taking shots.. and man that sucked. Though a lot of other things were fun like chocolates from relatives. The surgery took place on December 1996, 2 days before my finals, but I managed to pass. On January 1997, my dad, mom, brother and me took a trip to India to find the institute where we were to go? And so the journey started that would leave an impression in my heart for life?

thanks sis.. la next episode.. rest later... hehe It was January 1997, quite cold. I had just completed my seventh standard and was excited to go to India. I kept thinking about my to-be school. Fantasizing about how it would be fun. My brother was not as happy as I was, but we had no choice. We went to every place my parents had heard of. Roorkee, Simla, Chandigarh, Dehradoon, Jaipur.. and where not. Every school had something that my parents did not agree to, or I did not agree to. The reason of my disagreement though was that I had a friend that had joined an Indian institute the previous year. I was scared out of my wits to go somewhere I did not know anyone. So, I talked my parents into going there. We reached Delhi, and reserved a car to take us to Hisar. It took us four and a half hours to reach the school. All through the journey all we saw was ?khet? and empty plots.. I still remember the expression on my mom?s eyes. She was scared of sending me to a school which was so isolated. All I could think about was that at least I would not be alone there. My mom even told me that though we were going there for my sake but there were negligible chances of me getting admitted there. I could feel my heart sinking as she said those words. When we stepped inside the school it was like an oasis in a desert. The buildings were huge and incredible. There were a total of three hostels, an auditorium, a school dining hall, a dispensary, Phone booth, skating rink, hockey field, running field, a swimming pool, play ground, guest house.. and what not. I was impressed! The only drawback was that it was a girls school and PURE VEGETERIAN!! I took the admission test and was immediately admitted. I was due to be back there on April. We went back to Nepal and waited for the time when I would go back. I had no idea what I would be facing the next year in school. That was when the real fun started!!...

hehe rose sis... one more.. I did know that the school was a bit strict and vegetarian but later I discovered that there were some other things that I did not know. It was almost April and time for me to leave. My family was getting anxious as the time passed by. I was invited everywhere and guess what food they always made for me? CHICKEN? they were all worried that after some time I would not be able to eat meat at all. My shopping started too. There was a list of items that my school had asked to bring. It was pretty good to receive a lot of new things. And finally as days passed by it was April 20, 1997 and I was to leave for my school. Accompanied by my mom and dad, I left for Hisar. Once I reached there I shopped for other necessities such as Bucket, mug, rin soap, shoe polish, pillow and some other basic stuff. I was told that though we did have a ?dhobhi bhaiya? to wash our clothes, it would be better if we did it on our own. I was put in a room with 7 more people. As we got senior we had less room mates, and an eighth grader was expected to share rooms with 7 people. When my mom was about to leave me, she started crying. But I did not shed a tear, just waved goodbye and told her that I would be all right and see her in a month for summer vacations. For the first two days I DID NOT shed a tear. For the first two days? Slowly I started getting accustomed to the hot weather. But I missed my mom! I was 12 and had never washed my own clothes, polished my own shoes or even bought my own text books. And there I was on my own, it was do or die. The schedule was tight. I had to wake up at 5:30, change and go for morning PT and reach the grounds at 6. Come back take a shower, change, tie my hair (make two braids), take my books and go for breakfast at 7:30. Once done with the breakfast room where 1000 girls ate together in pin drop silence, I had to go to school, give attendance and then attend half an hour of assembly. After assembly we had 4 classes, then a 20 minutes break and after four more periods, lunch at 2:30. After lunch we would return to the hostels. We weren?t allowed to go to the hostels during school timing, it would be locked. We then had games period at 4:30 for which we had to change again and be out. At 5:30-7 we had study period for which we had to change again. After that we had to go to our hostels drop our book and report outside the hostels for prayers. After dinner at 7:45-8:30 we were expected to go back to the hostels. The gate would be locked at 9 and we weren?t allowed to leave t he hostel till next morning. So within a month of joining the place I lost 10 kg.. which is about 22 lbs. And within a month I discovered the other horrors of the place. As it was a girls school, guess what problem it had? In one word that describes it best ?lesbians?! Not that they were proper lesbos, but girls liking girls and giving them gifts. Sometime people were even caught kissing each other. No one was allowed to even hold hands or show any kind of physical togetherness. That totally shocked me because I was a very huggable person. We were not allowed to go inside any other hostels either. So people referred to it as jail at times. And each of us had admission numbers and were known by them rather than our names. Some times people joked that instead of admission no. 3541, I was ?kaidi no. 3541.? So when the day finally came for me to go home for summer, I could not wait. I called my mom and told her to make some chicken for me. I was finally realizing the value of home cooked food. So after an exhausting month, off I was for home.. to return to the same place after 50 days. 50 days of freedom. Freedom from the jail where we could not even see the road outside, we were even not allowed to go 10 feet around the main gate or the walls. So with a feeling of exhaustion I took the flight back to home and to freedom!!

Man!!!! cant stop writing!!! Of course my mom was a bit shocked to notice her chubby little daughter turned into a thin little zombie. But after my mom continuously feeding me I was again back to normal. I was treated so special. All my cousins were treating me with so much love. But the holidays ended as soon as they started, it was July. And when it was time for me to go back, I couldn?t help but cry. ?MOM, pleaseeeeeeeeee one more day and then I?ll go back. Please mom please.? So I was allowed to stay for one more day, but then back it was to school. When I reached there the temp. was 48 degree Celsius. With no air conditions and fans that revolved so slow that I could count how many times it was going around school became hell. I started getting rashes all over my face and body. The heat was so immense and we had to walk to places when the sun was blazing on our faces. Soon my face was so bad that no one could recognize it. And there was one more problem.. lice. The heat made us sweat and the sweat evolved into lice. My long curls soon turned into short unmanageable hair. SO from a chubby girl with long hair I had turned into a thin girl with short hair that was tangled all over. The bad stuff doesn?t end here yet. In that immense heat where any food would have cooked by itself, we were NOT allowed to wear any sleeveless clothes or shorts. Skirts had to be below the knee, and as only geeks wore skirts below the knee, we did not wear skirt at all. So slowly I changed into a tomboy, jumping all around. Bad things started happening then. I had a miserable fight with my friend, for whom I had gone to Hisar in the first place. My room mates changed and some of my money was mysteriously disappearing. The only good thing was that I had 2 room mates from Nepal, and there was a total of 7 room mates there. Slowly time passed by and we made more frens. But there was a time when rumor had it that I was a lesbo too, and that?s the worst rumor possible at that time. I cried and prayed to god daily that I could return home, but it never happened. I had to live there and face the people pointing fingers at me. That rumor disappeared after some time too and I promised to myself that I would be strong and not cry. I would never cry again no matter what happened. Academically, Sanskrit challenged my brain everyday. I decided to join coaching classes. One thing that we weren?t allowed there was to be late for anything. If we were late for meals we would not be allowed to eat that meal and so on. So when I always got late for my Sanskrit classes along with the other two nepali room mates of mine, we had no other choice but to make up excuses. We wud run as we reached the class, and act as if we ran all the way? ?Maam.. (phew ..phew.. breathing hard..) we.. did not? hear the bell.. for the class? so we were late.. and had to run? all the way?.!!? So of course we were excused. The poor soul was so good to us. On the last day we even put sancho balm on our eyes and pretended to cry. When she asked why we said ?maam, Anita ko gal stones hai.. hammey abhi abhi pataa chala? hamarey friend ko kuch ho gaya to hum kyaaa karenge?. Sob sob? ( Anita who was one of my nepali room mates, has gallstones. We just found out, what do we do if something happens to her.) She did not teach anything that day.. :D

Thanks a lot Nirman jyu. Abba k garnu lekhe pachi lekhya lekhai garna mann lagchha.. so here goes one more.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We also had this lemon tree where we stole the lemons from . Breaking rules was our hobby. We would bunk study and go to empty classrooms. Once when we returned from study, a bit early, we found this 10th grader stealing one of our tube lights and jumping on our bed. Guess what the warden did to her? She had a stick, 3 feet long and about one inch diameter. The girl got it that day? (we were some complainers!!). The stick that the warden had was name ?baal sudhar? (which means improvement of kids). Every morning we woke up with the big impact of bal sudhar on our tiny buns. We were so used to it that it did not hurt anymore. One morning even after the bal sudhar, my whole room kept sleeping. So after the whole hostel was empty and there was no sign of us, the warden came to our room and found us all snoring. As soon as we heard her voice, we got up with a start and reaching the thing closest to us. Some reached for their toothbrush. Some reached for the towel. We were scared to death of our warden Sanju maam. She was beating her way inside the room. And as my bed was in the far end of the room, guess what I started doing? Dressing up, and because I was in a state of half nakedness, she did not lay a finger on me;). My roomie Anita got three thrashings instead. In a state of confusion, she reached for her toothbrush. Sanju maam hit her once, ?abhi tak so rahi thi? (sleeping till now?).. second time ? abhi tak brush bhi nahi kiya?? (haven?t brushed yet?).. So the poor soul reached for her uniform and on came the third bang!!! ?kapde bhi nahi badle? (did not change your dress yet?). So it was survival of the wittiest!! One fine evening after diner, me and my room mates decided to dress me up as a bhoot. I put some make up on my face. My whole face was white and my eyes had black eye pencils around them. My lips were red and I had a torch light on my hand throwing some light on my face. One of my friends sister?s room was in the other end of the corridor so we went there to show her. She was so excited to see me and wanted to show me off to her friends. She wanted me to stand in her room facing the door with all lights off while she brought her friends in. So I took the position and was waiting for her to come in. But there was a small thing that went wrong. Some other friend of hers entered without knowing what was awaiting her inside. As soon as she opened the door and saw me, she shouted on top of her lungs and ran like her life depended on it. I was so scared that I went to the sink and washed my face immediately. Soon there was a knock on our door. There were some pretty pissed off tenth graders there. They had not complained Sanju maam yet. But the girl had run down the stairs and fainted in the corridor. She had some breathing problems and was now in a very bad state. (Dang!! Was I that scary?) I being an eighth grader had done that to a tenth grader. It was pretty bad. We begged and pleaded them not to tell Sanju maam and thankfully they decided that they would leave us with a warning of never doing anything to them again!! Phew. I am sure Sanju maam would have killed me if the matter had reached her. But till the time the girl graduated her 12th grade, she called me her ?bhoot?. And I was well known amongst her batch mates.
