H1b started a thread asking for logical reasons for ousting or supporting king. So, in this thread, let's attempt to give some logical reasons why his ousting is essential for development of Nepal: Let's first try to diagnose the reasons for Nepal topping the list for the least developed countries (LDCs): I’ve tried to explain according to theories of Socialists. 1. Legacy of colonialism : The countries with the history of colonialism often lagged behind in the race of development. We were not colonised. But they have discovered the term called 'internal colonialism' which suits to explain our country. Even after colonialists left these countries, they left the legacy of colonialism in these countries. But this time it’s not the people from foreign countries, its the elites of the same country. They influence the making of every policies and law, and have direct approach to top government levels thus influencing to make any changes in their favor. These are like the parasites for the country, they don't care anything for the country. All they care is about money making. They don't care about the welfare of the people, about the pollution, about the disease outbreak. They have the ability to go to settle other countries, and thus care less for their own country. I gave this as the number one reason for lagging behind in our development. Royalists often belong to this category. They want to save the monarchy because they consider themselves as the elites. Somebody posted in the thread yesterday claiming to be most learned, educated, and able to foresee the future. They are educated and learned; but they care very less for the country. They are at the top positions and make excellent development plans to prove to be able to foresee the future. But why all our development plans have failed? How did these clever people fail to see the mistakes and keep on repeating these mistakes in making development plans? I would like to cite the quotes from Mr. Krishna Prasad Sigdyal. In his participation of some economic forum in london, he said that everybody said that Nepal's aims were excellent but they asked where the plans were. They said, what Mr. Sigdyal have narrated as Nepal's development plans were only the dreams, and there were no plans on it. 2. Unequal distribution of wealth : Royalists are often the wealthiest people in the country. In most of developing countries, least percentage of people (<10% of population) shares the major portion (more than 2/3) of country's wealth. I’m not asking to nationalize their property like the communists. What I’m saying is that it reflects the situation of our country. These are the people who are taking part in polls like in sajha. They claim 49% of people support monarchy. How about 99% of people supporting republican from college polls that are probably more fair than the internet polls. 3. Absence of democracy: Governments are not liable to address to any problems of nations in undemocratic country. It's more likely that public will never learn about the major problems in the absence of strong opposition and a strong censorships of media. Governments are likely to perform better and address to the needs of people in democratic society. They can't afford to ignore the problems in the light of exposure by media and the voice of oppositions. This is why the first thing that the king has to do after take over was the complete censorship of media, ban on protests, and suppression of oppositions. In these kinds of society, people with problems can never speak up; media can't write about the problems, and there is no opposition. These types of governments are just waiting for a failure, and that's what happened in Nepal. Let’s compare the current scenario of Nepal with the one without the establishment of democracy in 1990. Where would Nepal be now? Do you think that king or then Panchayat system would have realised the mistake and make any changes in the constitutions? Would there be the possibility of rising of strong media like kantipur and others? Would there be the possibility of newer television and FM stations? Would there be the presence of NGOs (including the ones from royalists like Anuradha Koirala's Maiti Nepal) attempting to solve the problems of Nepal? Could we ever have got an opportunity to come abroad? Could there be possibility of private banking sectors or blooming of private schools, colleges and universitites? Would mobile phones ever come to Nepal? The sanctions made after "Magh 19" had already been voided in NTC. We portray royal family as saviors and then they start to think themselves as god being capable to do anything. They never learn a lesson and don't change no matter where they go. Didn't you hear of princess of Saudi Arabia deported from Boston a couple of months ago? She had brought Indonesian maids and let them work for mere $300 per month, hiding their passports. 4. Unequal laws and privelidges: Why do these wealthiest people of the country need to be protected and exempted from any tax? Why do these so called most educated and most learned people cannot compete with the non-elite class and need privileges for non-entering competitions? Haven't you heard of Lok Man Singh Karki? He never needed to give exam for Lok Sewa, and was promoted to even chief-secretary. He enters administrative service from king’s direct order (one simple letter). Why do these wealthiest people need money from government for their health check ups? Deuba government released 2 crores for king's sister. That legacy is still continued. This time, Sushil Koirala was blessed with 60 lakh rupees. Why do general public and often the important personalities from non-elite class never able to get any sort of help from the government? So called democrats are also trying to do the same what royals had done in the past. They are trying to revive that legacy; in that case, they are also doomed to failure. 5. Centralisation: Everything is still centralised in kathmandu. So it puts the risk of country's collapse if anything happens in kathmandu. It also shows the unequal distribution and representation inside the country. So-called elites have strong interest for this centralisation and are very reluctant to favor any policies for decentralisation. 6. Equal representation: Class with lowest representation and minority groups need special protection so that they get an opportunity too. So there should be special provisions for these people in every sector. The voices from minority groups are very unlikely to be heard in authoritarian rule, let leave about giving equal rights. People in Nepal have now realized the value of equal representation. But their means of doing is wrong, and may be motivated by some selfish group of people. What triggers them to fight for their rights? Let’s add more logical reasons for ousting the king. Please refrain from using any verbal assaults or vulgar words in this thread. Use logic if you can.

Thanks gahugoro, this is the way people should come up with. Now it is a turn of royalist to come up with same standard of logic :why would Nepal keep Monarchy? Just stating wrongdoing of other sides of story won't justify your logic.Hope to have good and logical heated debate... Good luck both the sides.

This is definitely the revolution time. But going through the threads in sajha and following the news from Nepal, I have an impression that Nepal is having an identity crisis right now. The question has arose about who is the real nepali and who is not nepali. Nepal cannot be compared with USA or Canada or Australia where the majority of the residents are migrants in the recent century. Nepal was the common border for Kirats and the Aryans since ancient times. And, till this day, everybody was living in harmony with proper distribution of power and region. There were some elites in Kathmandu dealing with State matters and there were farmers in Tarai growing rice to feed the pahadis, pahadis were busy growing whatever they can in the every cultivable land they can find in the hills. It is not the mining, industries or anything that keep the people in hills surviving for this long. it was same with the people in Tarai, they grew food and sold that to get their other needs. but now, considering Gurungs, Kirats and others as janajati, Nepalese have indirectly accepted that Aryans were the intruders to the present Nepal. Though people do not know when the hill Aryans started existing in those lands, they are now considered to be the new comers, ie not indegenous to that land. As described in the above paragraph, most hill people do not know when and how they came to exist there. most of them were busy growing food for themselves, and not they are considered the new people. This has come with a shock to them. At the same time, the so called indegenous people are claiming the state power. their argument of being deprived of the state power is due to the hill aryans. this is totally a false statement because it is not all the hill aryans who controlled the state powers but the kathmandu people. elites in kathmandu enjoyed the state power, not others. And here is the crux, though they were only the elites in kathmandu who controlled the power from kathmandu, they were somehow able to maintain themselves as the central and unifying body for the people from every corner of Nepal. If you are up for the united Nepal, then there always need to be one unifying power, a common representative of all Nepalese. That personality/institution should be able to win the sentiments of all walks of life of Nepal. At present, every political leader is so biased or thought to be biased to one side, they are incapable of being an unifying power. Just take and example of Girija, he has done quite a good job lately, but do all people from every corner of nepal consider him as the unifying power? Does he get respect from kirats from the east and khas from the west? can he be acceptable as the leader by the Madhesis? or, can it be Prachanda? can he win the hearts of every Nepali? can he be the symbol of 'Nepali-pan'? can any other such figure stand as uninfluenced by the foreign powers? Can they represent the integrety and sovereignty of in their act? or, is their anybody in Nepal who takes nationalism beyond the his ethnic/regional level to the country level? If there can be anybody as unifying entity to stop the 'nationalism' confining to the ethnic and regional level to the country level, then I am up for it. But, I personally do not see anybody with such attributes other than 'monarchy'. Monarchy here not necessarily imply Gyanendra. It could Hridayandra, you or me.

It's easy to point at the king for the 6 reasons but the current govt can be equally responsible for the same. 1. Legacy of colonialism : Most nepali politicians still crave this attribute 2. Unequal distribution of wealth : Politicians have been amassing plenty of wealth 3. Absence of democracy: There can be many examples of this 4. Unequal laws and privelidges: There can be many examples of unequality and priviledges 5. Centralisation: Not much is different now 6. Equal representation: Till date this is still a problem Is the current Government be any different? Or is the situation going to worsen?

IT is very easy to point out the mistakes but the people who complain seldom have any solutions to the mistakes that they complain about.

STOP YOU BLAME GAME !!!!stupid !!!!! i am trying to say is instead of revenge game ...be productive and think for nation ..why we need more blood. In process of kicking king out many people will die for nothing.Just to replace with another dictator name:Prachanda. King won't go so easily ,If the king goes there will be more blood shed and ultimately it will be Maoist. That for sure!!!If you are neutral person .Then forgive and forget and move on ..Make new nepal ..once again the responsibility has come to political parties ..prove to nepal that They are capable ..otherwise they do not diserve to rule Nepal...Let the king be ceremonial , pay tax, nationalize the property and make him figure head. Why so excited bringing communist in Nepal??? Have these maoist corrected their acts that you really want to side line king!!!If you are neutral citizen you will never think of taking king out at this time!!!!

it is not about party or king or maobadi.. it is about a system of governance. which one is the best? raja ko hukumat? janata ko sarkhar? maobadi ko dictatorship? maobadi say they don't want one party rule and are ready to run on elections..so, i suggest let raja run for parliament too.. if he wants to serve let him serve.. he has the resources to run for elections, does not he? he can even forge alliance with RPP.. he will have a good chance to be the prime minister... Sounds good too Prime Minister His Royal Highness King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev.. Congress is divided.. Communist is divided.. and let me tell u there are a lot of voters who are quitely rooting for the king.. king does have his sympathizers... he might even steal a few votes from congress, uml.... etc. Maybe the next best move for the King would be to appoint me his political advisor for a handsome return.. hahahaha.. seriously, what is the better system? a system that includes or one that exculdes? if we just be patient, chose the right system (do this first), do not repeat the past mistake after learning from them, be positive, keep working .. yes keep working and chipping away, things are only going to look up.. but we cannot afford to skip the above steps... maybe u can add a few more but not skip over it.. so people, what is the right system?

Saroj, 1. Legacy of colonialism : Most nepali politicians still crave this attribute I already mentioned that political parties are trying to follow the same path. What we should not forget is that transparency of it. We will at least be able to know what is going on without the censorship of media and opposition parties. If people protest strongly, they've to step down. But yea, at the beginning as it has showed, they'll do the same. 2. Unequal distribution of wealth : Politicians have been amassing plenty of wealth True, but we need to have strong agencies like CIAA, who can challenge them later on. I just have a hope that they will get punished later. But it's never ever going to be possible with king and royals. 3. Absence of democracy: There can be many examples of this Be specific. I didn't get what you're trying to say. 4. Unequal laws and privelidges: There can be many examples of unequality and priviledges Don't just try to get away by telling many. Give some examples then. 5. Centralisation: Not much is different now The process has started. It's not going to happen that quick. With king in power, people's voices are always going to be suppressed. 6. Equal representation: Till date this is still a problem Again the process has started. The constitution can be amended when people from minority groups start opposing it. We never heard of such things in 200 years of monarchy system. Is the current Government be any different? Or is the situation going to worsen? Situation may seem worse at the beginning, and the government may behave same. But with the people with the rights to decide, in the presence of strong opposition parties, in awake of media, and people being aware of the facts going on in the government, the situation will and must change. It is the system. IMI, why do u've to call me stupid. If you can, use your logic instead of blaming me. You talk about blame game and revenge, and you do the same. I consider myself as neutral to any other political parties, but biased against the king. So you consider only those people as productive supporting the king. Prachanda and anyoneelse has to go through the election every five years. The beauty of democratic system is that people has the right to chose it. Maoists have been weakened after terai system, and I want them to get defeated in the election, I don't need the god of Vishnu's Avatar to save from him. I want to save by myself. In the current scenario, maoists are going to be defeated at least from the valley and terai. Political parties are incapable and corrupted at the moment. But it's the system and I believe it will get better in the future. But one thing I know king is never ever going to be better. It is only going to lead us to darkness. I'm not excited about bringing communism in Nepal. I don't want another dictator to replace the current one. If I've only two choices: communism and monarchy, I'd rather go with monarchy. But I've more options than that. Royalists are trying to scare by showing these options, which is obviously not true. Dude, please be logical again.

Copycat, excellent questions; but wrong conclusion. Give me more evidence how can you raise all these good questions and say that king or monarchy is going to save us from all these problems? Do you consider them as god? Otherwise, it's not going to be possible. There're significant number of people who doesn't see monarchy as unifying power or the symbol of unification. If you can convince me, I'm ready to start lobbying for monarchy. You mentioned that monarchy can be me? How? I'm old enough to wait to marry princess and Prerana is already married. The thing that I don't like about monarchy is that you've to be in blood relation. There is no value of other people. Do you know the name of highest ranked award in Nepal? Do you know who gets them? Limewire, excellent comment. Seriously, I will vote for king if Prachanda is on the other side. But he has to come from the people; so that he becomes liable to the people. The right system is the one where the government has to be liable and listen to the people. Where they don't take it for granted because they were lucky to be born in the particular family.

Nepal and Nepalil can survive without Monarchy ...but due to the Indian eyes on huge Nepali resources and to stop authoritarian Communism in Nepal ...ceremonial king as head of state is needed......But king should not have any political and military rights ..only a symbol of head of state....I think it is better....otherwise.....Nepal and Nepali people again bound by uncertainty.....instibility...so on...Think coolly and ......lets make a broad base democratic system...... BE aware.....No leaders from panchayet...and no leaders after 1990-2006s failed democracy......Fresh and New leadership ,it is a huge task of every Nepali shoulders now....

Countrylover, you're right. Because of the failure and incapability of political leaders, king seem to be the savior. USA is concerned that more radicalism won't replace monarchy like the ones happened in Aghanistan and Iran. Even India is concerned to save monarchy now. That seems kind of logical too in the awake of maoist rampage, and raga of strikes by all the people. But what we should not forget that king has not realized his mistakes which is reflected in his defensive speech this week. That means, he won't get satifisfied by curbing the rules as you mentioned.

I'm not specifying any ideal nepali society. I don't know how to deal with the filthy people and probably sajha is the only one I'm going to speak publicly. There're all kinds of people in society, and they will use their own way to raise their voice. Filthy will use filthy way, but I don't how to respond to filthy people. I just want to talk logically, that's it. Suppose you're giving speech in public, and filthy person starting assaulting you verbally. What'll you do?
