A sees Red hats on B and C. If A had a black hat - B would realize that C's hand was raised because B had a red hat or C would realize the same seeing B's raised hand. Since everybody seems unsure of what color had they're wearing, A is smart enough to assume that A is wearing a red hat because a black hat would have led to the situation above.

slackdemic let me explain again in short, man, is my english that bad, hehehe ;-)) have already tried 3-4 times to explain simple logic. The only situation where one cannot know the color of his own cap is when all 3 people are raising hands and sees both others wearing same colored caps (red). A, the smart one, saw that both B and C were not being able to tell the color of their respective caps. If A had black cap, both B and C could tell that they had red caps. As B and C were not sure about the color of their cap, A claimed to have red cap.

Another liquid puzzle: You have two containers - a 9-liter one and a 4-liter one and an endless supply of water. Fill the 9-liter container with exactly 6 liters of water.

Put 4L + 4L of water in a 9L container. 9L container now contains 8L of water. From 4L container, put 1L in the 9L container. 4L container now contains 3L. Empty the 9L container. Put 3L from the 4L container into 9L container. Put 4L water into 9L container. This makes 7L (4L + 3L) water in the 9L container. Put 2L water from 4L container into 9L container. 4L container now contains 2L of water. Empty the 9L container again. Put 2L from the 4L into the 9L container. Put 4L into the 9L container. That makes it 6L (2L + 4L) in a 9L container!!

Ok, just saw slacdemic's problem and decided to work on it. I'm not sure if this is right or wrong but here's a shot. A, B, C are the three guys. By now, we all know that everyone is raising their hands. But then, B, being a smart one, thinks, if I were wearing a black hat, A or C would have realized they are wearing a red hat because A and C woud see that B has a black hat on and that they are raising hands because they see the red hat on each other. However, B sees that everyone is raising hands and noone has claimed they have a red hat on, so if they're smart (unlike us :D) they will probably all say "I have a red hat on!" together. :D. Is that right slackdemic?

Ok, here's a problem my math professor gave me during coffee. A few of us used to hang out and he'd give us these problems. So here it is. If you have seen it please do not answer unless someone does. Two ladies met several years after they had graduated from university. One lady- A, was a mathematician. The other lady- B, was a housewife. B, the housewife, has three sons- x, y, and z. After a few minutes of talking B decided to give a achallenge and asked her to find the age of her three sons. She gave her two hints: 1. x*y*z=72 [i.e. the product of their ages is 72] 2. x+y+z=number of windows in building across the street. A worked on the problem for a while and finally said, "Can you give me another hint?" B said "Yes" A asked "Does your oldest son have red hair?" B gave the answer and A gave the solution for x, y and z. Question: Find x, y and z. A lot of you may dispute the solution in the end.

Timetraveller, The second hint is bit misleading. ( I have seen this problem before). Instead of A asking: "Does your oldest son have red hair?" It should be B saying: My eldest son has red hair, OR my youngest son has red hair.

Okay, I am back! karmayodha You were very close to the answer, but that was not logically justified. No, no, your English is very good, but you it would still not be logical to say, "since nobody raised their hand, it must be me who has the red hat." :P Guest4 Not necessarily. Just because all of them don't know what is the color of their caps, one can be smart enough to say what color he is wearing. Republican and : "If A had a black hat - B would realize that C's hand was raised because B had a red hat or C would realize the same seeing B's raised hand." Yes!!!!!!! I find this would be the best way to logically describe the scenario. So the answer: If A was wearing black hat, it would be either B or C, whoever is smarter, that would raise his/her hand claiming that s/he must have the red hat. However, the case here is A can see that B and C are not claiming that one of them have red hat, A would be very certain (not because he sees them "confused") that he must be wearing the red hat. All of you guys were very close to the core of the logic! Now I'm in here, I will also try to see your guys' questions and work in it, time permitting. :)
