Anyone else who studied in Darjeeling, Kalimpong or Kurseong???

I conform to that spadgie story. I recall Cutinho saying the same. Not sure if a Paulite first noticed it but surely 'chatawala' came from North Pointers. During my years at NP wht I found the main diff between NP & SP were that while we were the quirky and infectious lot, Paulites never came down from their pedestal. I think its pretty much due to each school's culture. We were always fresh and open and dominated everything from sports to studies to women, we hardly saw Paulites achieving anything real. Guess Paulites had this huge aristocracy baggage from the past that bogged them down. Even after passing out I found Paulites very difficult to get up on their feet simply coz they couldnt mix around easily. But no doubt they were all nice guys. Maybe coz Paulites never came out of their nest. Contrary since we had a lot of day scholars, we were always sensitized to local way of living and anyone snooty was easily pulled to the ground. I also never understood why Paulites always made it a point to compare with NP in a derogatory fashion. For eg Sursum Corda is so nice here but Samsara cant help showing a condescending attitude. Get a life my friend, you'll be happier. hehe just kidding, I'm sure you're not as bad as you sound

But the point is we're all from Darj schools and only love should be flowing right now, but we cant really get over the rivalry can we??

Noth Point, your analysis sounded more like a what should've been rather than what really took place…hahaha Maybe you are right, who knows as I never attended SP during the 60s and 70s. And you say I must not be as bad as I sound...Well, to put it truthfully, the postings above me are me bing nice, a gentle-man if you may...Make no mistake about it (hahaha love this phrase) that I'm the baddest mothfugga out there. Now, let the rivalry continue even though we're Darjeeling brothers from different mothers!

BTW, During our time Paulites had long come out of their "nest" and even the dhotis (who in conventional Darjeelingay mentalitiy were considered hairy and ugly) were dating some fine hot local chicks...And yeah, there were a whole lotta locals at SP, so I really fail to fathom how you analysis/theory of the olden days could hold in this day and age...Your research has been debunked by the one and only Samsara. hahahaha

Dimple, you may know North Point who I assume, would either have attended NP the same decade as you did or maybe earlier. Since I know not what happened back then, could you please corroborate his statement?

The very fact that i was educated by the strict nuns of Loreto and with SPand NP guys hovering around LC girls. the fetes (melas) and the request stall where guys would be sending requests to girls openly on the mike was exciting too. The long walk to Np for Independance day march or for interschool sports to SP and the good plays and socials are things that have been embossed in my memory lane and will not be erased even if dementia should strike. I just loved my school days and enjoyed every day of my six years in LC boarding school, even the long and winding journey back and forth from Kathmandu to Darjeeling was breathtaking only I used to get car sick and threw up in every turn of the road. On the whole i do have very good memories and thanks for reviving it by putting up this thread.

Hetterika... no matter what you English School ko babus and nanis say, you just cannot compete with local kids from Ghoom School, kya. So, yo Chatawala and Padgie ko kura-lai Rangeroong Khola-ma bagaidinu.

I cant speak for either of the Royal families, and I am not one to easily defend the Royal family of Nepal, as many people on Sajha can attest to, but let me offer you an alternate version of why that might have been the case. This will probably infuriate you, since you seem to take so much pride in your school, but my intention in bringing this up is so that you understand that there might be another explanation for it besides the one you heard.

How do I put this without sounding like a dick? Let me start by saying I normally would not be commenting on something like this, but you've brought up something that I feel could be misleading based on my own personal experience. I too was accepted into SP l (and I am not related to the Royal Family in any way, shape or form, BTW). My parents put me elsewhere because they felt I was accepted not so much for who I was as an individual but because of whom my parents were. You might say that that could be true for most students getting admitted into grade 1 or 2. I suppose it was just more true in the SP of the early eighties than anywhere else at that time. There was a "wanna-be" attitude amongst some of the staff and board members of the school at that time that my parents felt would not make me the kind of person they wanted me to grow up to be.

I can only hope that has changed since. I know SP had some good principals later and I know a few alumni who are great people which makes me believe it has. It is a good school and I am glad you are proud of it.

I hope you aren't too mad at me. I've really enjoyed running into you on Sajha and the brief conversations we've had a couple of times.

While on the subject, one of things I've realized is it's a lot of fun to talk about school, especially when it comes to reliving good memories, but a school makes or breaks you only up to a certain point. I feel some of us take our schools too seriously for our own good. Perhaps it's got something to do with where we are in life. School loyalty and snobbery usually tend to wear out over the years.

Phoenix and all, here is something from the SPS archives (article from the 150th yrs commemorative album)...The 'under-years'!! :

"the whole tone of St. Paul's was objectionable; the educational standard was beneath contempt, and the boys' sole idea of enjoyment was to cause as much trouble and annoyance as they could ".
"The change from the old free-and-easy methods was at first much resented by the boys, who gave vent to their dissatisfaction in a riot and a smashing of the Rectory windows; but the riot was easily suppressed, the leaders being expelled.The new masters worked hard, and at the end of the year the Darjeeling News commented on the great improvement in the School, especially as to the appearance and behaviour of the boys. "

The year of this event............... 1877!!!

Now that's interesting, Sam... 1877 ....wonder how it was like back then , wonder who the expelled leaders were...wonder what the atmosphere was like... but now SP has churned out some of the best people out there !!

Phoenix, 1877...Damn, a long long time ago, my friend. Whatever maybe the case and all the things that have evolved since, the Paulites then had one thing that they still do today...And that is the loyal 'chaata'. hahahahaha

And the LC reunion, is it gonna be a big party? If yes, would love to come by...If not, someone should organize a reunion for all Darj schools here in the Mega Apple. ciao.

Jokes aside... we were thinking of a reunion of the 3 schools but then that's a large event and we've never had one ..or if we did i never attended one. Too difficult to manage and what if the chaatawalas and spadgies brought out their poorano grudges heheheheh . kidding hai feri..

This is strictly a ladies' day and if this works out well we might think of a mega event in the mega apple with the mega boyz - but next year . And if that is to happen...you know who's gonna organise it - Oh you don't? You of course Sam
