I recently naturalized as a US citizen and just got my US passport. I still have a Nepalese passport valid for another 9 years. In my upcoming trip to Nepal, I would like to use my Nepalese passport to enter Nepal and use my US passport to fly back to US. I do not see a problem in doing this. Has anyone tried it? What has been your experience at TIA airport and any suggestions?

Nepal govt does not recognize dual citizenship. So you might have to renounce your Nepali citizenship while you're in Nepal. Otherwise you can just get a visa from Nepalese embassy in your US passport and go to Nepal on that. The Nepalese embassy in Washington DC is pretty quick on giving visas. I think it's about $35 or so for a 30 day single entry visa. But I would not recommend your initial plan as TIA people will give you a lot of hassle. To solve that you either need be loaded (with some cash) or know some higher ranking officials who can make a phone call and threaten the TIA officials with their jobs.

Ok boy.. don't try to be smart..... this is how you will end up in trouble if you use Nepalese passport to enter Nepal.

When you each Tribhuvan Airport, during immgration clearnace process, they will put a sticker on your Nepalese passport indicating the arrival date. Such sticker is also used in any other foreigner's passport.

When you try to take off from that airport, they will check if you have visa to go to your final destination (USA). Of course, US embassy will not give you travel visa on your nepalese passport. So you cannot use that nepali passport.

But if you try to use US passport, that passport doesn't have that fugging arrival sticker... without that it will mean that you violated the immigration law of Nepal.. you are grounded, even end up in a jail for couple of days to months.

Don't take fugging chances: Do this.. which is simple.... Leave behind your Nepali passport in USA.. take US passport with you. YOu do not have to apply for Nepalese travel visa at Nepalese Embassy in Washington. They issue visa right there at the arrival setion in Tribhuvan Airport. Make sure you take passport size pictures with you and a pen (!) with you to fill the visa application form. Visa fees is US$30 (make sure to carry dollar CA$H). You will get 60 days visa.. and it's cool, they simply issue you the visa. Of course, the officer there with dhaka topi will try to ask smart question when he will see your nepali face. Such as : where is the expiry date of this passport... poor guy can read your pure nepali name in the US passport droooling.. but he will have to issue visa, no doubt about that. So when you return, there will be ZERO problem at immigration clearnace as well.

When Nepal will be engulfed by India.. it will be lot easier.. you can then be NRI, which is much better than NRN. There you go.. one advantage for Nepricanes.

I thought NRN could visit for certain days (30 days or so) for free...may be not....Extended visas are only $100.00 though....

Not only that.... even if yuo forget to take passport size photos... you can find the cameraman near by the immigration section ready..  they will charge couple of hundred Nrs, around 400-500...  try to give them US$5.. if they don't agree.. you can give up to $10.

While your plane descending for landing at TIA, air hostess will come to distribute disembarkment card.. make sure you get the one used by foreigners. There are separate cards for native and aliens. Again some air hostess act smart, and just by looking at your face, she might give you native card... ask for alien one.

Watch out, you might see that air hostess while roaming around New Road.. ha ha.. that happened to me.

but if one is an NRN, then that NRN should not be holding a Nepali Passport. Not really sure how to prove that you are an NRN to the Nepalese Embassy in Washington.. there must be certain documentations to be presented to prove oneself as an NRN. Any idea? Would not this require surrendering Nepalese citizenship, and so on?

Oh, absolutely, I agree with what you said in ur earlier post.....Nepali Passport is of no use if one has the US passport already....Well for the NRN issue, US passports will have your Country of Origin/Birth listed as NEPAL...so, should not be an issue....

yes, I agree that Country of Birth in the passport easily establishes that you are an NRN. Agreed.

But, looks like some are still holding Nepalese passports.. and if so, when such person send his US passport to Nepalese Embassy in Washington, would not they be asking to return the nepali passport, I assume they have record of passports they issued.

In the other issue, why to spend money for courier to send the US passport to Washington DC for 30 day free visa while you could spend cheap $30 at TIA to get the 60 day visa. Also, if you really don't wanna lose your Nepali passport, I bet you would go for 30day free visa by sending your passport to Washington.

Regarding Extended visa... $100.. yes, it's cheap.. one might really go for that path if one really needs to go to Nepal for almost a year... and such person may not even mind losing existing Nepali passport.
