let's B!tch slap any educated person who thinks ethnic federalism can work!!! why?
coz:

1. ethnicity based Federalism is the one of the  tactic to recruit the marginalized people of the society by politcal leaders.. So when you are educated...how can you fall for this trap..unless you are one promoting this agenda...

2. No matter how you are going to divide, people won't be satisfied...Coz whole concept is about dividing...Ethnic tension will be on rise as we have seen..

I have seen thousand of chart of nepal being divided into thousands of pieces...No educated common person would agree to this piece of crap.

3. When you give autonomy to a region, it is always easier for them to break up from the country..

4. yes all the jaanjaati leaders are oppurtunist..who have short terms goals in their mind...If you are so concerned about a ethinicity and race...start doing something to conserve and preserver it..instead of asking for this piece of crap called ethnic federalism....

So people beware...I am a nepali..and a proud newar as a proud newar can get..I would be very happy and the 1st one to B!tch slap any1 who starts talking about newah autonomy and all that crap....

although ANA is group of useless people..I think i will go and b!tch slap some people there who will come to give lecture in Oakland...Bay area doesn't need this piece of crap....

any1 is free for serious discussion and no trash talk

Totally agreed. We already have districts, zones and development regions. Why not decentralize some power to those districts and zones, and focus on areas/people that are backward?

If this trend of "divide and rule" continues, Nepal will be a small part of Bihar within the next 20 years.

how can you have a no-trash discussion when you start by bitchslapping all who don't agree with your views? ;)

But, I do agree that division of our already minuscule nation further
into sub-atomic regions will not solve any of our problems, but will
rather worsen the ones we already have. Water electricity food.

How would anyone be able to manage that? such and such region wants to "break free" from nepal.

Imagine an apartment, and there are 2 rooms and 4 roomates (common
senario for the overseas student right?). Recently, there has been
friction amongst the roomates. Would you think it possible for them to
start living exclusively in just one area of the apartment? They would
very much like to think that it would be ideal for them. F@ck the other
three, I'll get my own private section. What about shared resources?

Who gets the restroom? Who gets the kitchen? Sure you can take your
damn desktop and stuff it in our corner, but what about the carpet?
That doesn't belong exclusively to you? And things like electricity and
heat bill. Wouldn't it be more of a headache to get a voltmeter and
start recording the amount of ohms per day that your electric shaving
machine uses so that you can exclusively pay for ONLY the amount you
used?

Once you split, you'd have to divide straight down, and it brings into
play variables that were previously uncalled for when living together.
What if he steps over his geographical boundry? Or leaves his $h!t in
my area? I get to do what I will with it?

The more we divide and alienate ourselves the more trouble we actually
create for us. A lot of things in life cannot be handled by just one
person alone. One can't go rambo into a gold mine and carry out
everything on his own.

Ever wondered why bigger countries were more prosperous? ever wondered
what effect surface area has on granules of sugar dissolving faster in
your tea than just one big solidified sugar crystal? The power of
multiplicity provides benefits that cannot be achieved by the solitary.

30 million people packed in a 4000 sq km landlocked mountainous
paradise does not facilitate frictionless interaction, but we have to
do what is necessary given our conditions/situations to accommodate
ourselves and satisfy the will to live.

And that is the million dollar question which we haven't been able to
decide an answer to. What is necessary? Some say lets split, some say
lets join india, some say lets loot and kidnap the richer elements of
society. Good or bad, it doesnt matter. The necessity at hand is being
addressed.

Do we need a new flag? Do we need a new national anthem? I dunno, maybe
we do, maybe we dont. We just need to evaluate our needs and wants with
more focus and determination.

What we DO need is a bit of unity and trust. We need to reassess
ourselves as Nepali citizens. We need to relearn our constituion, and
its rights. We need to reshape our outlook and the way we look at each
other. We need to redesign our principles and goals to ensure our
survival in the new world. We need to resurrect that lost feeling of
pride once attached to our homeland and its 'peacefulness'. We need to
redeem ourselves in the eyes of our brothers and sisters. We need to
realize.

Let the bitchslappings begin!

It is a great idea to share the power to govern between the national and central government. Even though our country was divided into developemet regions, zones and districts we have lot of dire and heart-rending situations in nook and corners of our contry. There are womens ploughing the field, lack of food, starvation, disease, and much more. With this advent of recent development in the country, still there are marginalized people who get excited for the purchase of a telivision set or say a radio. The most preliminary challenge of any country is to provide food, clothing and shelter to the people. Another thing the concept of marginalizing people should be discarded. Since the foundation of Nepal, we have people living in peace and harmony. But in recent decades the maoist insurgency has claimed a multitude of innocent civilian victims: Men, women and children and even old ones. They have created a rift in the people and are exploiting their morale in the name of caste, creed, religion and definitely ethnicity. They need to be taken care of. They have lost their lands and direction of living. So as far as i think, i support federalism but strongly oppose integrating the country into different ethnic states. If one opts to divide the country into ethnic states they should also think of civil war.

Bitchslapping aside, since you invited a serious debate, here are my thoughts.

Re this issue, what needs to be understood are the underlying causes behind the demand of an ethnicity based federalism.

I realize there could be many Newars who do not care about a Newa Pradesh because either they are already well off than many of their brethrens or do not understand the issue well. It could also be true that many of them do not want to dwell on this issue considering it be a sensitive one which could easily spark an emotional debate. I also know a few Limbus who do not care about the Limbuwan, and --for the same reason,  Tamangs for Tamsaling, Tharus for Tharuhaat, Magars for Magarat, Gurungs for Tamuwan, and so on.

With the dawn of a republic and with it, newly charged spreading conscious and awakening in Nepal, everyone has the right to want to live with dignity and right to self determination.

We all agree on that, haina?

If you look at the current situation with composition of bureaucracy, judiciary and army, many of the ethnic groups, particularly the marginalized ones, do not see their future with the status quo or merely cosmetic changes in the government system. It requires a radical change in overall form of government. Hence, the demand of local self government.

The successive so called reforms in 2037 and 2046 did not bring the promised qualitative changes in the lives of the most ethnic groups. A few castes continued to be dominant in all aspects of governance.

If you do not want to look further, take the example of Nepal Embassy in Washington DC and Nepali Mission in New York. Why only the people belonging to one caste rule the roost from top to bottom? A fair minded Nepali will and must ask these questions, "Are there no other people in Nepal to represent our  Mission abroad other than one or two particular castes? Did the government not prepare preople from other groups as well to represent their country in a Nepali Mission abroad even after so many years of so called democracy?. Therein lies a key part of the answer to those who question on the need for an ethnicity based federal system.

One should remember that the seed of the division and discontentment was sown by no other than Prithvi Narayan Shah himself when he stressed the four jaat policy. No matter how much a modern day apologist wants to claim to mean it as 32 jaat instead of barna, the fact remains that only four jaats have been served well with Prithvi Narayan’s such divisive policy, and thus neglecting others having a long term ramifications on the country's composition. His “baaise-choubise” policy, often praised by the benefactors and blind worshippers, also alienated a good number of groups in different parts of the country who had already a established kingdoms of their own.

Those Nepalis who migrated to US and western countries and enjoy the freedom and are, or pretend to be, advocates of human rights and of equal rights and opportunity should also feel ashamed of continuing practices of untouchability in their country of origin, and also the way many of the ethnic groups are continually sidelined and marginalized from the mainstream. Big talk is easy and cheap. If one got to a western country by jumping several steps up a ladder or because one’s parents or relatives happen to be influential or even your last name helped you, it is hard for them to think how difficult it is to move through the bureaucracy or any part of the government when your last name (jaat, thar) is not similar to those sitting in a government office.

Needless to say, I belong to a marginalized ethnic group and thus I understand the pain –having myself been a sufferer on the receiving end. Also needless to say that I do not want to see the country further divided, both geographically or emotionally. The government of the day, or even earlier governments in the past several decades, made no appreciable attempts to integrate the ethnic groups into the mainstream. The so called creamy layer group, belonging to a handful of castes, continues to sit there and milk the government cow to the extent of the last drop. The madhesi groups are going to make their demands fulfilled simply by their number of representatives in the parliament.

I can only say that there is lot more danger to dividing the country by not fulfilling the demands of marginalized ethnic groups than from an ethnicity based federalism. Because these marginalized groups have been deceived several times by empty promises in the past, there is every likelihood that they will be left behind again. Therefore, the answer therefore lies in the demand for an ethnicity based federalism.

Now back to educated people supporting an ethnicity based federalism, many actually believe that the model of local self government would work better to fulfill the aspirations of the people if it is sincerely and diligently planned and implemented. Otherwise, it is going nothing more than an old wine in new a bottle labeled “Ganatantrik Panchayati Bewasta”.

However, if there is an alternative way to fulfilling the genuine demands of the marginalized groups that will truly begin the process of integrating them into the mainstream, let us talk about it. Dividing the country by geographic areas on the basis of developmental won’t work as it will be no different from Birendra’s developmental zones. There are also those politicians, and academicians, and also in the administration, judiciary and in the army who fear that a self governing province will end their monopoly in the system and thus bent on opposing it by creating fears of the country being divided. These fear mongers are shouting out loud from their rooftops as they know that their time has come to end their monopolistic way. They must give in to a republican state.

Let it be known that the people are wary and tired of the tactics like empty promises and leap services and they won’t work anymore. The new slogan of new Nepal should be “samridha pradesh, sushasit desh, sukhi janata . Jai Nepal .

@ mardshab I really appreciate putting forward serious discussion.

It is true that as you have pointed are many newars are well off or either just to ignorant when it comes to politics and some do not want to dwell on this issue considering it be a sensitive one which could easily spark an emotional debate..

I also agree with your statement of "
current situation with composition of
bureaucracy, judiciary and army, many of the ethnic groups,
particularly the marginalized ones, do not see their future with the
status quo or merely cosmetic changes in the government system
" and successive reforms has brought nothing.

I know it's totally hard for a person from marginalized society to move up the ladders and something must be done to tackle issue of equality. I still support local governance and
genuine demands of the marginalized groups that
will truly begin the process of integrating them into the mainstream.

BUT SERIOUSLY do you think this ethnic federalism will answer this serious issue..when the whole issue was brought just to get marginalized people fired up..by political parties to gain some points lead...which seems to have back fired very badly.

I seriously believe the concept of dividing can't do any good. And no matter how you divide, there will always be unsatisfied people. What if there is a big chunk of ethnic people who have no major stronghold in number of population and distributed through out the whole country.

where can they relate to????????

Besides what about sub division of ethinic people?
People of Terai want madesh pradesh, then Tharu want their own..and I don't mean tharu people's wish isn't legitimate  but things like this creates more and more division and ultimately we have factured country and more ethnic tension for independant representation..

And during this fragile period when country has just been fresh off civil war, do you really want ethinic representation by the means of ethnic federalism??
when in hisory we have seen so many times autonomous region branching off as a new country...

So mardshab tell me is this fear mongering or the real truth ??

Do you think our so called leaders can deliver
the genuine demands of the marginalized groups?

I still believe there needs better representation of all people in every aspect of state and grip of creamy layer on all facets must be checked..It is only possible when people of all ethinicity become aware and I don't deny there has been lots of cultural injustice..

But again..if some educated fool tries to advocate ethnic fedelarism....let the b!tchslapping begin....

-> I'm neither well off and I don't think that I understand issue less than these self-proclaimed ethnic leaders.

With the dawn of a republic and with it, newly charged spreading conscious and awakening in Nepal, everyone has the right to want to live with dignity and right to self determination.

-> Absolutely. With this agenda, noone can have their hidden agenda of depriving the rights for any groups and promoting the equal representations and blah blah blah communist agendas.

If you look at the current situation with composition of bureaucracy, judiciary and army, many of the ethnic groups, particularly the marginalized ones, do not see their future with the status quo or merely cosmetic changes in the government system. -> I'm not convinced that local self government can clean the mess. It is another form of mirage shown to thirsty people.

-> Right observations, but ethnicity based or whatever federal system is going to make the issues worst than before. Now, at least there is a system how corrupted it might be; under the federal system, the criteria we're going to create for employing these will be the wars among the ethnicities or whatever divisions they're going to create in the name of federalism.

I can only say that there is lot more danger to dividing the country by not fulfilling the demands of marginalized ethnic groups than from an ethnicity based federalism. -> We've had enough slogans. With this, we just will be multiplying the corrupted politicians.

dude, I understand your frustrations and appreciate your seriousness. But I feel sorry that you're falling for their trap.

How about educated people who are fine with "Hindu" nation but are opposed to ethnic federalism? Those are the one who needs the b!tch smacking. It is such a double standard. You are fine to force your religion onto other and have it smeared on the constitution but when the marginalized group ask for freedom based on their ethnicity, then you have a problem. Be neutral on everybody and everything, esp on the constitution that is for "everybody". Constitution is for everybody, not jus the "Hindus". Just like you are cheery picking on what you want for "yourself" in Nepal, they are doing the same. There are plenty of these educated hypocrite in Nepal and the worst are the ones overseas.
I am completely against the ethnic federalism but if the constitution is going to write a "Hindu" nation, I have no problem with Nepal breaking up. It is inevitable now.

I am against writing it a Hindu nation but ethnic federalism may work like here in the USA see most black ppl live in the south while most white in the north but its not like southerners can't go to to the North and work I think ethnicity should be able to help develop that region and most ethnic people living in that area and if each region is developed then may be people Lamont migrate to the capital like not everyone likes to live in DC here some people enjoy livin in Arizona so it may work but again if uneducated people run the office it's the same thing agai and it will be inevitable and I think there should be rights to Religion like in the UsA you can't just declare a Hindus nation and that can cause a civil war in Nepal
