Messi Madness!

Let's talk about football for a change. The Great Messi seems to be playing like the world is going to end soon. He has now broken the record for all-time goals at the FIFA World Cup. He now has 18 goals under his belt, or shoes if we talk in football language. And if he keeps on scoring like crazy, then he might even leave this World Cup with at least another four or five more goals, and then it will probably take a century or two to break that record.

Pele is Pele. Nobody can beat him with his 3 World Cup medals, and as the youngest player to score a goal in the World Cup at 17 years and 239 days. The young lad, Yamal, has also scored his first World Cup goal in this edition, at 18 years and 343 days! And I think he will be around for another 3 World Cups for sure, but I don't think the young ones will last like Ronaldo, the current one, and Messi, because these two are definitely aliens.

I feel sorry for Ronaldo, but sometimes things don't turn out right, even if you are one of the best in the world. Sometimes you need some luck as well. I think in some ways Messi got lucky. Argentina had it all when they faced Germany back in 2014. We all thought Messi would finally win the thing, but it took God another 8 years and tons of penalties to finally bless Messi with his World Cup!

FIFA is a corrupt organization and maybe the world should unite and open a different football federation and start from scratch again. If FIFA continues to extort tons of dough from sponsors, host nations and the fans, someday, nobody will be attending the World Cup matches.

I really feel sorry for the Azzurris as well. The Italians play beautiful football just like the Brazilians. The only difference is that Italians do their dance in defense, while the Brazilians do their Samba in the offense. We haven't seen the Italians play in the World Cup since God created Adam and Eve. Well, the four-time Champions have missed their third consecutive tournament. I mean, you are Italy. You cannot miss any World Cup tournament at all.

And I hope there will not be any World Cup tournament in North America ever. The timing is just wack and the rest of the world suffers. If we do the math, then Asia and Europe make up almost 70% of the world's population and almost 90% of the crazy hard-core football fans maybe. And this World cup has screwed up everything for us.

For some of us, a month-long World Cup binge will surely create a ton of health problems in the days to come. The matches are either during our bedtime or when we wake up and that creates tension among spouses, employees and employers, and even hard-core Ronaldo and Messi fans.

And our restaurant wallahs are not making much profit because by the time fans do show up to watch the games, most of them are already drunk or will not be spending tons of dough when matches start at almost 11 pm.

So far, this World Cup has been exciting like hell. Well, I don't know if hell is an exciting place but with fire, you can have BBQ and maybe the Devil is a much more interesting career than the ones in the heavenly skies but we will talk about that later.

The goalkeepers are now superstars in this World Cup. We know Messi and Ronaldo and what the other young lads can do but we have to really stand up and give it up for the goalkeepers from Cape Verde, Curaçao and Iran. Who the fork really has a dozen of saves in a World Cup match and stop great teams from even scoring a single goal?

We haven't had any surprises in this World Cup, really like in the past when Argentina suffered defeats against Saudi Arabia and even Roger Milla and his boys in the 1990 version. Germany's 7-1 total smackdown of Brazil in 2014 made us all cry. But you can't blame the Germans. You are Brazil and you are at home and in the semifinals and you disappoint your own folks, country, and the world. I blame the Brazilian defenders who were trying to score goals in the front rather than defend their honor in the back.

What are my predictions? Well, I am not good at them, but my wife is somehow related to Nostradamus, maybe because she has predicted how my life will turn out to be, and so far she is right on the money! My wife picked Germany in 2014, France in 2018, and Argentina in 2022. I think she got lucky for 2022, but she says Messi was meant to win because even God was on his side.

She tells me that she will decide once the round of 16 is finalized. Well, so far, it looks like Argentina, Germany, England, France, Spain and Brazil and Netherlands, and the USA will be around till July 4th as America celebrates its Independence Day. But we never know with this new 48-team format, even the big heavyweights could meet in the round of 16, and we might have surprises along the way.

I think Argentina and England will be in the semifinals this time as well. And my subconscious mind thinks Germany and Spain could round up the slots. I want England to win the World Cup by beating either Germany or Argentina so that they can finally get over the Hand of God and the ghost of Wembley as well.

Why do I get the feeling that my wife will pick Argentina again? If that happens and Messi and his lads win it again, then Messi will be bigger than Maradona and even Pele. Well, he already is for the young ones, but for some of us, Maradona is still the greatest, and for your grandparents, Pele is Pele!
