Nepal Celebrates it's Democracy Day Amidst Chaos

The fifth anniversary democracy day celebration was marred by the bombs set off in various parts of the capital today. Bombs were deployed in strategic locations such as the District Court of Patan, Kathmandu Nagar Palika and outside of Singha Durbar. The casualties have not been clarified by the government but according to bystanders and witnesses there could have been about 120 dead and about 250 injured in these incidents. Home minister Hom Raj was not available for comments.

The Democracy day celebrations planned for the evening however went on without any incidents. The five hour program was held at the Deepak Bista Memorial Hall. Prime Minister Khagendra Thapa was there to precide over the event. During his speech no mention was made of the atrocities which happened earlier today.

In retrospect, five years after the trade blockade from US and India which began in May 2005, the will of the people won the autocratic regime resulting in an all out democracy by the people, for the people and to the people. The nation of Nepal finally breathed the air of democracy on May 20, 2010.

As predicted by few liberals, the transition period from Monarchy to a Democratic Government was not smooth. As soon as the King stepped down, the different underground parties raised their heads. The same of names resurfaced on the horizon of the newly found democratic government. In spite of the majority disliking the same old names, because of party politics, the Koiralas came back into the political mainstream. Right after the king stepped down, there was so much chaos in the streets and the capital that a curfew had to be slapped for two consecutive months. Despite general popularity within the people of the valley, the army still had loyalty to the royals. The royals leaving the scene to an unspecified location created misplaced loyalties within the army camps and the law makers resulting in an uncertain political and social atmosphere which is believed to have cost over 3,000 lives in the capital alone.

Finally when an actual cabinet was formed, they had to start with an emergency rule - restricting press freedom and freedom of movement, which the Prime Minister termed "for the sake of national security and democracy". In fact there was no other way the country could come to a flow of regular life unless these emergency rules were set.

As normal flow of life returned, the Maoist problem resurfaced with such intensity that few members of the new government practically had to run for cover to India. In 2013 three ministers of the Nepali government were targeted by the Maoists and a public list was available which cited five more ministers being in the HitList. Those named all decided to take refuge in neighboring India. The Maoist insurgents had created huge bases in the capital itself threatening to overthrow the government. As the social bond grew weaker with Party politics and fight for power, the Maoists have become very strong seeping into the capital.

In spite of the democratic movements promises of taking over all parts of Nepal into one democratic country, there was never any attempts even to hold talks with the Maoists. The Maoists were not willing to have talks and the internal politics did not leave room for the decision makers to focus too far from their own bases.

After 5 years of democracy today Nepal is a failed state. In a country where the biological and physiological needs of people such as food, drink, shelter, water, etc. has not been met for a huge percentage of people, the ideals of Democracy rarely seeps into fulfilling these needs.

The incidents of today throws uncertain doubts in the mind of democracy lovers about the feasibility and practicality of democracy in Nepal. It seems like it's only a matter of time till the Maoist insurgency claim the capital and throws Nepal into another 200 years of communist regime.

Signing off Saroj Nepal.

Shyamu I'm surprised you haven't figured out by now that Newuser does not have the brains to figure that out.

It is really hilarious when someone start their arguments saying
"You guys have tried to invoke me but I'd not belittle myself by arguing with you any more."
Then goes on to argue with boring repetitious idealistic jargon.

I guess you just belittled yourself by arguing with us again. But tell you what? your belittled mentality is already visible to everyone by now so no need to prove it again and again.

NEW DELHI: Take this. Two agencies accountable to the same ministry are working at cross purposes. While a wing of the Home Ministry, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) guarding the Indo-Nepal border, was busy in purging out and nabbing Maoist rebels who tried to surreptitiously enter this side, another wing of the same ministry arranges a meeting between top Nepalese Maoist leader Baburam Bhattarai and CPM general secretary Prakash Karat.

"This is a case of proverbial left hand not knowing what the right hand does in the government," termed a security expert.

Tell me someone who doesn't know that the politicians are corrupt in Nepal. They are all there to make money. There is only one icon that is stopping them from looting our motherland Nepal. The very existence of the King stops them from plundering Nepal.

So it is in their best interest to get rid of monarchy so that they can plunder the country and take the most advantage.

Mark my word, the politicians who want to get rid of the king only wants to do so because the king stands in the way of thier selfish motives which is to squeeze as much money as they can when they are in power and then leave.

Although everything surrounding the King is negative and he has taken full advantage of his royalty, he is better than the politician who have nothing to lose besides taking advantage of their time in power and then getting the hell out of there.

People need to realize this sooner than later. In the name of democracy these politicians are using the general population to attain their inner motives which is to gain power then riches then get the hell out of there leave the country in ruins.

After the king is removed and the politicians have plundered Nepal down to her bones, then India will happily come and take over Nepal.

I'm sure all of your dhoti supporters are going to be very happy when that happens.

Dashain is a time for reconcilliation and peace.

From a practical point of view, there can never be peace without reconcilliation of different governing forces. The trident of politics that is buried deep within the common Nepali's heart need to come together so that the pointed ends are facing inside instead of outside. Right now, the King is hurting nepal with his autocratic rule where he and his family are above the law. The Maoists are hurting nepal with thier forceful recruitments and mercyless killings. In the middle, the political parties, seem like vultures waiting for that 15 months of fame where they will get to put enough money in their pockets to last for next 5 generations.

If the Maoists and the Political parties are able to get rid of the king. There will be too much struggle for power between them. Right now Maoists have a stronghold on more than 50% of rural Nepal. Would they be willing to let go of their hold simply because they agreed to partner with the political parties in order to get rid of the king? What would be the ensuing rule of Maoist and Democratic Government be like? Anyone with firm feet on the ground can tell that that's not an ideal scenario at all. It would be even worse that it is now under the King's rule since that scenario could mean and ensuing civil war that never ends until the heart of nepal is burnt out of recognition.

The only solution I see is that these three come to the table and talk it out and agree on something. It would be easy if their common goal was for the betterment of the common nepali, but unfortunately it's not so this is going to be tough, but it seems like the most hopeful scenario that we can hope for. With this, the powers of the KING will have to be curtailed drastically since he's going to have to agree to be under the law, and not getting millions of dollars every year out of taxes.

Instead of supporting a never ending civil war, let's all support reconcilliation and a coalition of the three forces which are currently turned in opposite directions instead of turning towards each other for the common goal of benefitting our country and our countrymen.

In this vijaya dashami let's toast for the victory of practical thinking for Nepal and Nepali, rather than impractical, biased, one track point of views.

With the alliance of 7 parties with the Maoists, it seems like my fiction has the potential of turning into reality.

This is a good time to revisit this scenario. People of Kathmandu should be careful regarding what their current movement might result in.

The images below are evidences of supposedly 'democratic' media altering information to fit thier desired goals. Fck the public. Thier own propaganda is what's important.

Newsofnepal and phalano.com are supposedly the true voice of people, yet they are only distorting the photo.

Bombs have not been blasted yet but Maoists have been gradually destroying the sense of security in the capital. Now that they have unfettered access to all establishments and households, they have been seeping into the everyday lives of people through plain exploitations.

The law is playing deaf to all Maoist actions. After Maoists have come into the political mainstream, life in the capital is slowly turning into a state of lawlessness. Maoist cadres have been entering households and looting with the help of guns and knives. If anyone resists they get severely beaten up.

These maoists looters mostly target well to do houses and enter in groups mostly at night. There have been some looting during the daytime as well but most of these victims do not report to the police for fear of more retaliation. The looters warn them not to report to the police otherwise they would come back to bomb their house.

The maoists are trying to control business functions as well as seen in their attempts to close up different industries. There have been cases where they have physically attacked business owners for not doing as told.

What kind of democracy is this? Gradually the maoists are seeping into the everyday life of the capital and that too not by popular demand but by forceful exploitation. Today one person's house gets robbed. Tomorrow another person's house gets robbed, but noone speaks out because of fear of retribution. One day it's going to be your house and believe me that day is not far.

The victims consider them lucky to have gotten away without any physical injuries or with their lives intact. What about the emotional scar that they carry with them for the rest of their lives? Who is to blame for this? And who is going to take any action against these looters?

Things are getting serious in the capital now. Every one who is a middle class or upper class is a target of these atrocities. The widespread tales of looting is mostly kept a secret but chances are you already know someone personally whose house has been robbed or exploited under the threat of lethal arms.

I have always been raising a red flag to the coalition of Maoists with the SPA because once the Maoists got into the capital, things were not going to be good. But now it's too late for that, they are already in the capital and their exploitations have begun.

What can be done now? What can we do now?
