This year's ANA convention was my first experience of being with that many number of Nepalese away from Nepal. I had a great time, met a lot of frens and even some relatives for the first time in my life, but I felt it was too expensive. I am a student and had to save some money aside for travelling, lodging and fooding. If the tickets were a little cheaper for the concerts or watever they had, it would have been much easier. What I did not really like was since I was a member of the winning team of one of the tournaments, I even had to pay money to get in to the concert in order to receive the trophy. That really did not make sense to me.

Some events were indeed expensive. But NYC/NJ is expensive place.I think they did make lot of profit though!! i would not have paid $39 banquet and $35 for that concert+$20 for that DJ.anyways it was overall good as i met frens .But i spent lot of freaking money!! probably first and last convention unless it comes to my city:)

it is hard to say if they made profit as a lot of local people failed to appear as expected. You always have a choice to do it or not but you are spending that money once a year for a convention that brings nepalese from all over the us/canada....i think people should stop whining...and just live a little and thank a little...

Just a matter of suppy and demand. As long as there are people who are willing to pay x amount of dollar to attend ANA events, they will keep on charging as much as they can. Having said that, ANA being a non-profit organization, money should not be its focus. It should strive to make its program accessible to all of the diaspora. It is not absolutely necessary that proceeds from registration and entry fee should cover the entire event expense. ANA should devise other ways to make enough money so that they can keep the entry barrier low for the participants from all walks of life. After all, isn't that the point, to have as many Nepalis in North America meet for few days and enjoy the company of each other while doing something good for our community?

It is always easier to take the higher road in terms of preaching at least. No states will pay out of their pockets for the loss at ana. ANA does make profit in some states and loss in others but losses are not charged back either..ANA bears it. I think they tried to make the cost as low as possible..for eg.try getting a 5 star hotel on July 4th weekend for a 89 bucks... I think they did make attempts to keep cost low....but you have to realize that NJ is not NE. There is no way to level the cost but charge some of it back to the participants which will of course be higher than other states..

there are other conventions and other organizations that manage to charge participants a flat fee of 50-60 which covers 2 nights of food, plus culture program and dj dance party. I don't know why ANA is always expensive. If other organizations can manage to keep cost down so that everyone isn't spending an arm or a leg, why can't ANA?

that sheraton was not even star hotel. it was just regular hotel. and it was very very expensive...everything. they said its in new york, but it was in ghettoville of new jersy. and on the top of that they didnt know how to manage this convention. may be they were inexperienced on those kind of things. j bhaye pani it sucked big time. i went there hoping it will be as great as pervious years anas but that became only hope. now i have to think about next year.

I hope people registered at this years ANA. I can't believe how can anybody organize an event with forums, movies, sporting events and still try to cover the whole cost, without people paying for the registration. And people are still complaining, as if the volunteers are getting paid off of the money they are wasting. Let's see: USD 400 for airfare: Expensive, but goes to airline $89 for hotel: good rate for a 5 star in NY, goes to hotel $ 5-10 for alochol: better than last years, goes to hotel. Now, how else can ANA raise the cost of the event w/o raising the price of concert/shows? Besides, small events easily charge 25-30 dollars in NY. I wish ANA comes out and shows the income/expense report for each of it's event, that would shut the people up. ANA!!hearing?
